Editorial Evaluation, Authenticity & Sensitivity Reading, AI Analysis

Business collateral, advertising and promotional campaigns, as well as books, articles, dissertations and other types of manuscripts benefit highly from outside reading and editorial evaluation. Editorial evaluation provides strong checks, setting realizable benchmarks. It offers clear guidance for improvement so that your writing and deliverables fulfill their communicative goals.

Our evaluation services let you, the client, know where your writing and deliverables are relative to where they need to be to meet their planned objective and optimize audience reception.

WHY EDITORIAL EVALUATION IS IMPORTANT

No matter how brief or long, whether technical or creative, all forms of writing tell a story. And all stories are organized around a central idea, an intended outcome or promise. Ensuring that the story you tell delivers on that promise is pivotal to its success. It also is a hallmark of good writing.

“GOOD WRITING” CONNECTS WITH YOUR AUDIENCE

Good writing forges a connection between the reader (target audience or consumer) and the story’s central promise. For this to occur, the writing must achieve internal coherency: the voice, style, and grammatical elements of the writing must support the overarching narrative, the story you are attempting to tell, and align with the story’s promise, its central idea or argument.

Achieving internal coherency involves writing for inclusivity even when the objective is to tailor the writing to speak to a specific audience, such as a class of consumers or members of a particular profession or field of knowledge. This need applies equally to business, academic, and creative forms of writing. Moreover, achieving internal coherency requires, where applicable, aligning the writing with a company’s branding, value proposition, and mission, and making sure these are consistent across the text.

GOOD WRITING PROJECTS AUTHENTICITY & SENSITIVITY

In addition to matters of coherence, forging a strong, successful connection between the writing and the audience hinges upon positive perceptions of authenticity. Does the writing present believable, accurate representations of people, characters, places, and things (ideas, data, facts, or actions)? Does it avoid cliches and harmful stereotypes? Are the language conventions that the writing employs appropriate for the subject area?

Among the evaluation services we offer, authenticity and sensitivity readings address these types of questions and more. Reading services are useful for improving human-generated work, but they are especially valuable as a check for AI-generated texts. These services can be contracted separately or as part of a broader editorial evaluation at a discounted rate. (Contact us to discuss combination service rates.)

SUCCESSFUL WRITING BUILDS TRUST

Making sure that your writing, messaging, and deliverables are not only mechanically correct but read well, with sensitivity and authenticity, is important for building trust with your audience and inspiring them to action. Whether this action involves sharing or promoting your message, purchasing goods and services, accepting your proposal or manuscript for publication, or some other call to action, its elicitation depends on the establishment of good will, of a successful fusion between your story and your audience.

Neither editorial evaluation nor sensitivity/authenticity reading alone can guarantee a successful outcome, but they do comprise practical steps that one can take to optimize the likelihood of success.

Please note that a single page is defined as 250 words, per the industry standard for a double-spaced manuscript page. Unless stated otherwise, rates are by the hour. Rates and service outputs are estimations only and may vary by or not apply to each project.

EDITORIAL EVALUATION

Basic editorial evaluation consists of a full read-through of the document for the purposes of examining the overall clarity, style, flow, and coherency of the writing. Along with identifying key strengths and weaknesses, it determines where there are opportunities for improvement.

Editorial evaluation is particularly useful for strengthening the overall style, organization, significance (or contribution) and quality of the writing in order to improve its chances of fulfilling its communicative aims.

The process of evaluation involves reading and responding to the text, providing constructive feedback. Unlike our editing services, it does not involve direct editing or revision. That said, editorial evaluation may include inline editorial suggestions (markup) for you to accept or reject as you see fit.

On average, a 30-page research article will receive approximately 5-10 typed (single-spaced) pages of constructive feedback in addition to inline comments and editorial suggestions.

AUTHENTICITY READING

At AMC & Associates we specialize in business writing and academic writing in the social sciences and the humanities. When we conduct an authenticity reading, we evaluate how identities and experiences are represented in the writing to ensure that these representations are intentional and that the author is conscious of their potential impact on readers and also on persons associated with the identities and experiences represented. This is especially important when trying to write for or about an experience or identity that is outside of your own.

Specific to academic and business writing, reading for authenticity includes evaluating the writing style and vernacular to ensure that it adheres to the conventions of its intended subject area and professional domain. This type of evaluation stands in contrast to sensitivity reading, outlined below, which focuses solely on inclusive language use.

Approximately 8–15 pages per hour.

SENSITIVITY READING

Similar to authenticity reading, sensitivity reading evaluates how identities and experiences are represented, but it focuses specifically on language use to ensure that inclusive, conscious language is employed throughout. It aims to reduce or eliminate language that expresses bias on the basis of gender, culture, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, age or religion.
